MMAYE Basketball Tournament Success

MMAYE (Mississauga Mandarin Association Youth Empowerment) hosted a basketball tournament at the Gateway Center on November 25, 2011. Over 50 youth from Mississauga showed up to compete or just to watch the games. Winners Leo Lee, Leo Pan, and Nelson Liu played fiercely and their hard work undoubtedly paid off.
The night began with a preliminary round of games. Ten confident teams of three competed for a spot in the playoffs as they displayed strong perseverance and admirable teamwork. By the end of the night, after a heated four hours of games, the two undefeated teams battled it out on the gymnasium floor. This final round of the tournament had the crowd on its feet, as both teams displayed the determination to win. Enthusiastic cheers came from the audience at the end of the night, as Leo Lee, Leo Pan, and Nelson Liu finally scored the shot that won them first place.
The boys received first prize trophies and tickets to MMAYE’s next upcoming event, Youth Productions. The MMAYE is planning another sports event – a badminton tournament – in February. They organize events that bring youth together and give them the opportunity to take leadership and make a difference in the community. More information can be found on the MMAYE website: www.mmaye.com.

The Life of MMAYE? Oh. It’s Filled With Talent
This night took place on November 4th, between 1830 and 2200 hours. The heated battles between competitors and their dedication in showing off their upmost talent in front of the audience… It was certainly a night to remember. Now, before we get to the story of the talent pageant, let’s have some brief background on how we were able to make it happen. So you’re here, at the MMAYE website. Who are we and what do we do? Well… We are a group of youth who got together for a chance and opportunity to earn volunteering hours, to meet new people, to gain great experience, and to be part of something new, something exciting. It started off with simple events we volunteered at and helped out with but overtime, we began to hold our own events. The events were held solely for the entertainment of others, in hopes we could inspire the community and others to push their limits. That’s how the talent pageant came into play. It’s where you can get up on the stage and into the spotlight to perform in front of your family, friends, and strangers. It’s where you can get out of your comfort zone to see what you are capable of. Now, the preparation and planning weren’t within a day’s work. It was over a span of many weekends and hours of planning and assigning jobs. On top of that, advertisements and invitations were to be made, places to book, equipment to find and it was pretty hectic. Eventually, we were able to pull it off, considering most of us weren’t exactly the most experienced stage workers or event planners at that. So there you are, what made the talent pageant happen was because of the hard work and dedication of all the MMAYE members.
So let us get back to that night. Personally, I was able to be one of the competitors on the stage and it was pretty fun. It was my first time singing in front of an audience and I have to admit that it was a bit intimidating. Hands shaking and burning up with nervousness… it was tough. I did sing with two of my friends, which made it easier to cope with the nerves. In addition, it definitely helped having my friends stand up and cheer at the back of the room. It really was a great experience.
With the new feature of the talent show: the beauty pageant… competitors were able to dress up in their own fashion to display their senses and their personality. Instead of just judging on talent, the questions asked to determine your personality, on top of the fashion rankings made judging more complex but it did give the competitors a fair chance in all areas, as there were different prizes to go around. It was different but performers got a bit more time on stage to talk to the hosts and to interact with the audience.
Furthermore, there was a pretty good turn out with the audience and we even had an overload of performers when it came to sign-up time. People had a great time just hanging out and enjoying the performances of their friends and cheering them on. Our judges were nice and honest at the same time and they gave us ways to improve in different areas. One of my highlights of the night, besides performing, was I Rock With The One’s dance routine. They’re a group who dances at The Gateway Centre, where the talent pageant was held and they’ve always been my biggest inspiration in dancing. You should check them out sometime!
All in all, it was a great night. I had a lot of fun and I got to bond with the MMAYE members even more. I was able to see the talent in my friends who were performing and see the love in my friends who were cheering. I loved it and I cannot wait for next year’s talent pageant! I’m curious to see the changes and the improvements that will be made but for now, stay updated with other MMAYE events. You will not regret it!
Until next time,
Nanyen Lin.
MMAYE (Mississauga Mandarin Association of Youth Empowerment) is a branch of MMA (Mississauga Mandarin Association) that was created by youths for youths. MMAYE started in 2007 originally for Chinese teens between the ages of 13-24, to get involved in the community and to develop leadership skills within; now in 2011, we are still getting adolescences to participate in the community but this organization is open to all youths of different ethnicities.
MMAYE hopes to bring out the leaders and peacemakers in every one of its members by providing many volunteer opportunities where experiences can be gained. Everything MMAYE puts together or creates is produced by energetic and passionate teens. Some of the events we’ve plan or are planning are:

Other smaller events like dances and parties
